Arena ~ Madison Square Garden 
This design is an asymmetrical sideways-knit shawl featuring a stepped lace border pattern that continues across the width of the shawl at the end. 

"I chose the colors for the shawl designs [in the New Yorker Collection], while watching a brief documentary on the illustrator Christoph Niemann. A whimsical abstract artist, his accomplishments include quite a number of cover illustrations for The New Yorker magazine. He says that his favorite colors are yellow and black, yellow being the perfect color for New York, which was the first city he moved to on his own." - Melanie Rice

Pattern includes written instructions as well as charts, and you can use any yarn weight up to aran. Be sure to adjust your yarn requirements when making substitutions. Note that this design should be blocked firmly.  Acknowledgements:  The lace contains elements from a stitch pattern found in the Barbara Walker Treasuries.

DESIGNER RECOMMENDED YARN: Highland Sport by Cloudborn Fibers (100% Wool; 50g/192yds): 3 Skeins.  Shown in Maize Heather.

ALTERNATIVE YARN: Prairie Spun DK by Brown Sheep Co.  (100% USA Wool; 100g/256yds): 2 skeins.  USA wool dyed in beautiful colors. PRE-ORDER now available in any color.  Please allow at least 7 business days for your pre-order to arrive at your location.

ALTERNATE YARN: Arroyo by Malabrigo (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 100g/335yds): 2 Skeins.  Kettle-dyed in small batches to create subtle to highly variegated yarns.  Washable, wonderfully soft and bouncy Merino wool from Uruguay.

ALTERNATE YARN: O-Wash Sport by O-Wool (100% Washable Certified Organic Merino Wool; 100g/304 yds): 2 skeins.  Gentle processing with environmentally friendly procedures to prevent felting and create beautiful solid colorways. Milled & dyed in the USA from wonderfully soft merino wool.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 72" wingspan x 19" tall at centerline, after firm blocking
YARDAGE: 475 yds of sport weight yarn
SKILL LEVEL: Easy to intermediate

NEEDLES: Size US 6 / 4mm 32" circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
OTHER TOOLS: Tapestry needle, Row counter, & Pins for blocking
GAUGE: 16 stitches = 4" in garter stitch, after firm blocking  Gauge is not crucial for this project, but will affect yardage and finished size if different from above.
