This cowl is an inspirational project that encourages experimentation. Try a different gauge and yarn weight to play with the size of the cowl, explore different color possibilities, hold a couple strands of yarn together, or even spin your own yarn. The stitch pattern lends itself beautifully to a relaxing knit, but its unique construction makes it fun to knit again and again.
This cowl is worked flat on the bias, and then seamed. Begin by increasing on both edges, then only one, and finally decreasing on one edge to create this unique shape! (Please note that the size you choose to knit will alter the amount of yarn needed.)
The yarn used in the samples is a long gradient, but you can achieve this effect by using multiple colors of mini skeins, too.

Worsted/Aran Weight
DESIGNER RECOMMENDED ARAN YARN: Handspun by Yarn Ahoy (100% Wool; 160 yds): 1 (2, 2, 3) Skeins,
ALTERNATE DK YARN: Marla by Manos del Uruguay (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 100g/273 yds): 1 (1, 2, 2) Skeins. This marled gradient yarn is a gorgeous blend of colors in some of the softest Uruguayan merino wool available.
ALTERNATE DK YARN: Gradient by Schoppel Wolle (100% Virgin Merino Wool; 100g/284 yds): 1 (1, 2, 2) Skeins. This slowly changing gradient yarn is made of a slightly felted merino wool single ply that will resist pilling and is perfect for accessories.
ALTERNATE WORSTED YARN: Rios by Malabrigo (100% Superwash Merino Wool/ 100g/210 yds. 1 (2, 2, 2) Skeins. Variegated, kettle dyed yarn that is vat dyed in small batches. Each dye lot can vary dramatically. We suggest using the highly variegated colorways of Rios for this pattern so that the texture and colors are amplified.
ALTERNATE SOCK / LIGHT FINGERING YARN: Zauberball 100 by Schoppel Wolle (100% virgin wool; 100g/437 yds): 1 (1, 2, 2) Skeins. This lightweight, long gradient yarn can be held double for a thicker gauge.
SIZE: Toddler, Youth, Adult Small, Adult Large
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Circumference: 18 (21, 24, 26)" Back of Neck: 5.25 (7.25, 9.5, 9.5)"
YARDAGE: These are just approximations. Total yarn usage will depend on the yarn you use (fiber content, ply, etc.), your personal gauge, and any modifications you may make. DK - 165 (265, 400, 430) yds. Fingering: 250 (340, 520, 560) yds. Sport: 210 (315, 490, 525) yds. Worsted: 150 (231, 345, 365) yds.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate: I-cord, Kitchener Stitch, Seaming
NEEDLES: Size US 6 / 4mm 24" circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge for DK weight yarn. Length of cord is not critical. Size up for larger yarns and down for smaller yarns.
